UN Warns of Consequences of Earth's Glacier Shrinkage

The United Nations has called for urgent international coordination to address the repercussions of climate change related to the reduction of sea ice, the melting of glaciers, and the rapid and permanent changes in the ice sheets.

By consensus among the member states of the World Meteorological Organization, a decision was made to prioritize the study of changes in the ice sheets, as announced by the agency's spokesperson Claire Noulis to reporters.

She clarified that this decision was made "in light of the increasing impacts of sea ice reduction, glacier melting, ice cover, permafrost, and snow on rising sea levels, as well as water-related risks, water security, economies, and ecosystems."

Noulis stated, "We need more monitoring to assess the magnitude and speed of change. We really need to think seriously about managing water resources."

The organization's Secretary-General Petteri Taalas noted in a statement that "the issue of the ice sheets is not only a hot topic for the Arctic and Antarctic regions; it is a global problem."

During the discussions, delegates from around the world expressed concern about the rapid and, in some cases, permanent changes occurring in the ice sheets.
