Kremlin: Ukraine and Moldova's EU Membership Could Destabilize the Bloc

Russia stated on Friday that the European Union's decision to open membership talks with Ukraine and Moldova is politicized and could destabilize the bloc. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "EU membership negotiations can last for years or decades. The EU always has strict criteria for membership, and it is clear that neither Ukraine nor Moldova currently meets these criteria." He added, "It is obvious that this is a completely politicized decision, and a desire from the EU to show support for the countries. However, such new members could destabilize the EU, and since we live on the same continent, we are, of course, monitoring the situation closely."

EU leaders agreed at a summit held yesterday to begin accession talks with Ukraine even amid its war with the Russian invasion, but they could not agree on a financial aid package of 50 billion euros for Kyiv due to Hungary's opposition. Peskov stated that Hungary is not a supportive country for Russia, but Russia admires its readiness to defend its own interests.
