Foiling of Terrorist Attack Attempt Before Russian Presidential Elections

The Russian Federal Security Service reported the arrest of three young men after they attempted to ignite a fire at one of the regional election offices in Barnaul on the eve of the Russian presidential elections. According to Russian intelligence, three residents of Novosibirsk region prepared five incendiary devices (commonly known as Molotov cocktails). However, they were unable to carry out their plan and were arrested by the Russian Federal Security Service near the main election office building while attempting to execute their terrorist attack.

The intelligence statement indicated that the group's leader, aged 23, moved to the Altai region at the end of 2023 for work. He was commissioned by representatives of a terrorist organization banned in Russia to commit the crime. He devised a plan to carry out a terrorist attack after successfully recruiting friends aged between 18 and 26 to participate in the crime. Security personnel initiated a criminal case for investigation under Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code (attempt to commit a terrorist act by a group of individuals by prior agreement).
