Taboun and Steinmeier Discuss Expanding Cooperation Between Algeria and Germany

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Taboun discussed ways to enhance and expand bilateral relations in all fields with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. A statement from the Algerian presidency indicated that the President received a phone call from the German President, who congratulated him on the 60th anniversary of Algeria's independence and expressed satisfaction with the strong relations between the two countries.

The Algerian presidency reported that the two presidents explored "ways to strengthen these relations and expand them into all areas, intensifying investment in various sectors, especially energy and renewable energy, mechanical industry, construction, cultural exchange, health cooperation, including the establishment of the Algerian-Qatari-German hospital. The leaders of the two countries also agreed on the necessity to hold the joint cooperation committee as soon as possible."

During this phone call, the presidents reviewed "regional and international issues of mutual interest, such as the situation in the Sahel, particularly in Mali, and the need to find peaceful solutions in Libya through elections." The German President expressed Germany's support for the role of the UN envoy to Western Sahara and thanked Algeria for its role in promoting peace and stability in the region and across Africa.

In the context of Algeria's international relations, President Taboun received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, João Gomes Cravinho, in Algiers on Wednesday. The minister affirmed on this occasion that Portugal is seeking "to develop the historical relations it shares with Algeria," highlighting the importance of relying on "friendly and stable countries with which we have trust-based relations" given the current international circumstances.
