After Al-Sadr's Demands: Al-Sudani States the State is Responsible for Major Decisions

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani affirmed today, Saturday, that the state is responsible for making major decisions based on the interests of Iraqis. In a speech on the sidelines of the "Conference of Iraqi Ambassadors," which was followed by "Baghdad Today," Al-Sudani stated, "The independence of our national decision is at the forefront of the principles we discuss," emphasizing that "the state is responsible for making major decisions in accordance with the constitution and based on the higher interest of Iraqis." He added, "We affirm our conviction in resolving disputes through diplomatic means, referring to our disputes and those in the region."

Earlier, the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada Al-Sadr, had directed a request on October 27, 2023, to the government and parliament to vote on closing the American embassy in Iraq, citing the latter's unlimited support for the Zionists against Gaza. Al-Sadr stated in a post on X: "Out of a commitment to support the oppressed in all corners of the earth, I call on (the Iraqi government) and (the Iraqi parliament) of all factions and orientations, for the first time and for the sake of public interests and not private ones, to vote on closing the American embassy in Iraq due to the limitless American support for the terrorist Zionists against Gaza."

In response, Member of Parliament Burhan Al-Mamouri addressed Al-Sadr's request regarding the closure of the American embassy in Baghdad, indicating the initiation of a campaign to gather signatures from MPs to close the American embassy in the capital. Additionally, he called on the parliament presidency to convene an extraordinary session to propose a binding law regarding the closure of the American embassy and to vote on it within the House of Representatives.
