Predictions from the Edison Research Center show that former U.S. President Donald Trump easily defeated Nikki Haley in the Republican primary elections in South Carolina. This victory continues Trump's winning streak as he edges closer to securing the Republican nomination for the third consecutive time to compete again against Democratic President Joe Biden. This result was not surprising, as multiple polls had consistently indicated Trump’s significant lead over his competitor.
This win will bolster calls from Trump's allies for Haley, the last remaining competitor, to withdraw from the election race. Trump has dominated all five contests held thus far in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and now in Haley's home state, leaving her with almost no opportunity to secure the Republican nomination. Haley, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations during Trump’s administration, insists that she will continue her campaign at least until "Super Tuesday" on March 5, when Republicans will cast their votes in 15 states and territories.
