Spanish coach Xabi Alonso announced today, Friday, that he will continue to manage Bayer Leverkusen, leaders of the German Bundesliga, thus ending speculation linking him to Liverpool or Bayern Munich, teams he has previously been associated with. Alonso told reporters, "Last week, I met with the (club officials) and informed them of my decision to continue coaching Bayer Leverkusen."
Alonso has finalized his decision regarding his next steps amidst rumors of his departure next summer. Transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano reported via his account on platform X that Alonso is set to issue an official statement confirming his continuation with Leverkusen for the next season. He added that the Spanish coach has made his decision and has already informed both Liverpool and Bayern Munich about this step.
Romano also pointed out that the release clause in Xabi Alonso's contract will be activated in the summer of 2025. He further noted that the Leverkusen coach has already developed a plan with the club’s management regarding new signings and has convinced some stars like Florian Wirtz not to leave next summer.
Additionally, Romano mentioned that besides Bayern Munich and Liverpool, Real Madrid is also monitoring Alonso's future. It is worth noting that Real Madrid announced a few months ago the renewal of their current coach Carlo Ancelotti's contract for two additional seasons, keeping the experienced Italian until the summer of 2026.
