Prominent Pakistani human rights lawyer and activist Jibran Nasir was abducted late Thursday evening in Karachi, southern Pakistan, sparking widespread outrage in the Asian nation. No law enforcement agency has claimed to be holding Nasir, but his abduction comes amid a new wave of political unrest in the country.
Nasir's wife, Manisha Pasha, stated that they were driving home when a white truck and car obstructed their path. She said, "Then at least 15 men, possibly more, wearing civilian clothes approached. They asked Jibran to get out of the car," adding that "all the men were armed and some were carrying automatic weapons."
She noted that they "did not disclose the reason for taking Nasir with them, but she tried to inform the police, who refrained from registering the incident officially." Nasir has recently criticized a crackdown on leaders of former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party and the move to try them in military courts following violent protests that occurred in the country last month.
