Iran Invites Kuwait Amid Tensions Over Dorra Gas Field

Kuwait announced today that its Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah received an invitation from his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian to visit Iran. The invitation comes amid rising tensions reflected in reciprocal statements regarding the Dorra gas field, with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia reaffirming earlier today that the natural resources in the Dorra field are joint property of the two countries only.

Both countries renewed their calls to Iran "to negotiate the demarcation of the eastern boundary of the divided submerged area," stating that they would enter negotiations as a single party and Iran as another party "in accordance with international law." Iran had previously claimed rights over the Dorra field, labeling an agreement made by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait last year to develop the field as "illegal."

Kuwait's Foreign Ministry stated in a communiqué that the Foreign Minister received today a copy of the credentials of Iran's new ambassador to Kuwait, Mohammad Toutounji, and that he handed him an invitation from his Iranian counterpart to visit Tehran. The statement noted that "various aspects of Kuwaiti-Iranian relations were discussed during the meeting."
