Will Relocating Government Offices Outside Baghdad Solve the Traffic Crisis?

The Baghdad Provincial Council confirmed today, Saturday, that the proposal to relocate some government offices outside the capital to reduce traffic congestion has been under discussion for a long time without any decision being made so far. Council member Asil Al-Khalidi stated to "Baghdad Today" that "the government is very interested in addressing the issue of traffic congestion in Baghdad, and there is real work underway to mitigate this problem that Baghdad residents have been suffering from for years, without seeing any solutions addressing this issue."

Al-Khalidi explained that "there is a proposal and study by the relevant authorities to work on relocating some offices and institutions outside the heavily congested areas in Baghdad to reduce traffic congestion," pointing out that "this matter has been raised for a long time and is still under discussion, with no decision made yet."

In reference to the contribution of government offices and ministries in Baghdad to the traffic crisis, the traffic directorate indicates that there are 3 million vehicles in Baghdad, and during official working hours, with the influx of vehicles from other provinces, the number exceeds 4 million. Many citizens from other provinces come to Baghdad for various government transactions, in addition to the visits made by Baghdad residents to ministries and government institutions scattered in the densely populated areas of the capital.
