U.S. Intelligence: The Conflict in Gaza Shakes the Middle East

U.S. National Intelligence Director Avril Haines warned that "Iran-supported armed groups continue to plan attacks on U.S. forces." Haines highlighted during a session in Washington, D.C. that "the conflict in Gaza has shaken the Middle East and caused new security and humanitarian challenges." She noted that "the Houthis (Ansar Allah movement) have resumed their near-daily maritime attacks following their declaration of intent to escalate," indicating that "the crisis in Gaza has been a reason for the escalation of violence in the region." Regarding the pro-Gaza protests condemning the Israeli war at U.S. universities, Haines stated that "we currently have no information indicating that Hamas is influencing student demonstrations at the universities." She mentioned that "Iran is pursuing a long-term strategy by supporting Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis," adding, "our assessment is that the Houthis will continue their activities for some time in the Red Sea." She concluded by stating, "The Houthis have said they will respect a ceasefire if it is achieved in Gaza."
