Former Brazilian international Marcelo, a player for Fluminense, was sent off on Tuesday after causing a horrific injury to his opponent Luciano Sanchez, a player for Argentinos Juniors, during a Copa Libertadores match.
Marcelo attempted to dribble past Sanchez in his usual style, but his foot crushed the Argentine player's leg, causing him to fall to the ground screaming in pain. Argentinos Juniors announced that Sanchez was taken to the hospital for treatment and that the club would issue a statement later regarding the player's injury updates.
Marcelo expressed his feelings on his official Instagram account, saying, "Today I experienced one of the hardest moments in my career; I unintentionally injured a teammate. I wish him a speedy recovery." His Brazilian club also shared a message of support on X, stating, "Fluminense expresses its solidarity with the player during this difficult time and wishes a quick recovery to Argentinos Juniors defender Luciano Sanchez who was injured in a joint play."
