Step Towards the Next Presidential Election After Christmas and New Year

Next Thursday marks the seventh session to elect a president of the republic, while consensus on the new president's name remains elusive. Hence, attention is turning to the steps that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri will take regarding calling for dialogue and revitalizing this initiative, as it serves the country's interests, according to informed sources. These sources confirmed to "Akhbar Al-Yawm" agency that this dialogue is essential, especially following calls from many MPs, including the change MPs, particularly Deputy Elias Jreidi, who urged Berri to hold sessions for dialogue and consensus on electing a president since the country can no longer bear any more delays.

The sources predicted that the dialogue would commence after the Christmas and New Year holidays to agree on a presidential candidate, as well as to address financial and economic conditions. They noted that calls for parliamentary sessions to interpret the constitution remain within the realm of escalating rhetoric, as the constitutional texts are clear. Thus, there are more pressing matters, such as approving economic and financial reforms, along with the demands of the International Monetary Fund.

Despite some MPs' efforts to avoid attending legislative sessions before a president is elected, it appears that the opposition to legislation is fading due to the disagreement among the change and independent MPs on this matter. The National Moderation Bloc confirmed its attendance at these sessions, in addition to most independent Sunni MPs, such as Deputy Bilal al-Hachimi. This division among the change MPs regarding the candidate's name and the legislative sessions was evident in today's election session.

The sources emphasized the necessity of legislative sessions, stating that the functioning of the parliament should never be obstructed. They revealed that the call for the first legislative session would occur once the joint committees complete the capital control law, which, despite the difficulties in discussions, has a political decision in favor of its approval as soon as possible.
