Who is Mohammad Mustafa, the new Palestinian Prime Minister?

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appointed his economic advisor, Mohammad Mustafa, as the new Prime Minister, succeeding the resigned Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh. Mustafa was born in Tulkarm city in the West Bank in 1954. He joined Baghdad University in 1972, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in electrical and electronic engineering in 1976. In 1983, he joined George Washington University in the United States, where he received a master's degree in management in 1985 and continued his education at the same university, earning a PhD in business administration and economics in 1988.

Dr. Mohammad Mustafa is a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and one of the largest Palestinian businessmen. He previously held the position of director at the Palestinian Telecommunications Group "Paltel" and the Palestinian Investment Fund, which is affiliated with the Palestinian Authority, managing assets amounting to about one billion dollars to finance projects throughout the Palestinian territories. He also held various positions at the World Bank in the U.S. capital for 15 years.

Ten years ago, Mustafa was appointed to help lead reconstruction efforts in Gaza after the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas. He served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy in the national consensus government formed in 2014, maintaining the position for one year. Additionally, he worked as an economic reform advisor to the Kuwaiti government and as an advisor to the Public Investment Fund in Saudi Arabia.

In January 2023, President Mahmoud Abbas appointed him as the Governor of Palestine at the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development in Kuwait, a position he held until January 2024 when he assumed the role of Governor of Palestine at the Arab Monetary Fund.
