Ukrainian authorities have announced their intention to rename certain cities in the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula as part of what is called "decolonization." Specifically, this includes assigning geographical names of Turkish origin or historical Crimean Tatar names. This was stated in a message published by the official channel of the Ukrainian Ministry of Reintegration on the "Telegram" app, which added: "Mechanisms are currently being agreed upon to allow for the writing of place names in Latin letters in media and scientific contexts, as well as on road signs and maps." For its part, the Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that "the residents of the Crimean Peninsula voted in favor of reunification with Russia in a democratic manner, fully complying with international law and the United Nations Charter." According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of the Crimean Peninsula "has been completely closed."
