Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi warned today, Wednesday, of the dangers of military escalation in the region on multiple fronts. He emphasized the "necessity of defusing the current tense situation through an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the implementation of humanitarian aid to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the area." This statement came during el-Sisi's reception of Greek Foreign Minister George Jerapetritis, in the presence of Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
The official spokesperson for the presidency, Ahmed Fahmy, stated that the "Greek Foreign Minister conveyed the greetings of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to President Sisi, affirming his country's keenness to enhance cooperation with Egypt in all fields," a point that President Sisi appreciated, highlighting the importance of the strategic relationship between the two countries, and praising the coordination and cooperation on various issues, both bilaterally and through the trilateral mechanism with Cyprus.
The spokesperson added that "the meeting discussed the tense regional situations, where President Sisi warned of the dangers of military escalation in the region on multiple fronts, stressing the necessity of diffusing the current tense situation through an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the implementation of humanitarian aid to alleviate the crisis in the area." He reaffirmed that Egypt would continue to make every possible effort to support the residents of the Strip and to provide relief while working to calm the situation.
The Greek Foreign Minister agreed with the Egyptian position, stating that "the current crisis has reaffirmed Egypt's pivotal importance as an indispensable pillar for stability in the Middle East." They also agreed on the need to seriously and swiftly push for an equitable and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue, considering it the central issue in the region and the path to restoring peace, security, and stability.
