An Iraqi security source revealed today, Friday, that an operation named "Revenge" has commenced in the areas of Hawi al-Azim, north of Diyala province, following the recent "ISIS" attack on an Iraqi army checkpoint. The source stated that "an operation started this morning in Hawi al-Azim, on the border between Diyala and Salah al-Din, amid the highest state of alert in seven months in a sector that had witnessed relative stability."
He added that "the operation is in retaliation for the ISIS attack that occurred last night on a military point, resulting in the martyrdom of an officer from Basra and the injury of a soldier in the first major security breach." He pointed out that "the security alert within the Hawi al-Azim sector extends from Diyala to Salah al-Din, marking the dividing point between the two provinces."
The source also noted that "the attack in Hawi indicates the presence of dormant cells that are still active in the area," affirming that "the operation aims to secure the regions and prevent any further breaches."
Yesterday, a security source reported that an officer was killed during an attack by ISIS on a military checkpoint north of Diyala province. The source mentioned that "a terrorist attack occurred near Hawi al-Azim, the northernmost part of Diyala, close to the administrative border with Salah al-Din." It was highlighted that "the attack resulted in the martyrdom of an officer with the rank of captain during an assault by ISIS on a military security point in Hawi al-Azim, 75 km north of Baqubah." The source indicated that "the forces are in a state of security alert and have sent combat reinforcements immediately to the area."
