Alphabet, Google's parent company, showcased how it relies on artificial intelligence across all its operations, including a newer version of its chatbot "Gemini" and its famous search engine. This highlights Google's ongoing efforts to update its products since the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT, which amazed the world in late 2022 and posed a threat to its longstanding dominance in online search and AI.
Among the updates unveiled by Alphabet is "Flash," the latest version of the Gemini 1.5 family of AI models, which is faster and cheaper to operate. There is also a prototype called "Project Astra" that can converse with users about anything captured by their smartphone cameras in real-time, as well as search results categorized under AI-generated headings.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, told reporters when asked if AI updates could jeopardize Google's profitable business, "This is a moment of growth and opportunity." The new product showcase took place at Google's annual developer conference in Mountain View, California, on Tuesday.
