After a video circulated on social media showing a citizen and his wife attacking a police officer, the Ministry of Interior clarified the incident. In a statement released on Monday evening, the ministry confirmed that the video, which depicts the assault on security personnel while performing their duties, is indeed authentic. It announced that the case has been referred to the police station, where all necessary legal proceedings are being taken.
However, the ministry did not provide further details via its official account but confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. This came after social media accounts reported that a police officer in a traffic patrol stopped a young Kuwaiti, born in 2002, for speeding and reckless driving.
The video, shared from Kuwait, shows chaos on the main road for an unknown reason as a woman slapped a security officer, and a young man struck the officer himself before jumping on him to continue the altercation, but the officer managed to respond and hit him back. There is no information about the reasons behind the incident, and some are calling for their prosecution for disrespecting a representative of the state.
As the officer was performing his duty, the young man's mother arrived in her car with his father and intervened to protest the stop of their son, prompting the officer to request backup from other patrols. The young man and his mother then assaulted the officer. Eventually, security forces arrived, were able to subdue the young man, placed him in a patrol car, and took his vehicle to the Al-Jabriya police station.
It was revealed that charges have been filed against him, including "insulting a public employee, assault, and several other traffic violations."
