Eight People Killed in Stabbing Incident in Central China

A man killed eight people and injured another with a knife in central China, according to state media reports on Friday citing local authorities. The attack occurred Thursday morning in Xiaogan city, Hubei Province, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV. The official Xinhua News Agency stated that the injured person's life is not in danger. CCTV noted that police have arrested the suspect, a 53-year-old man, who had previously received treatment for psychological issues. An investigation into the incident has been launched.

China has witnessed a wave of stabbing incidents in recent years, while shootings are extremely rare in this country where private ownership of firearms is prohibited. On Monday, a woman with a knife killed two people and injured four others at an elementary school in Jiangxi Province in central China. Additionally, a knife attack in early May resulted in two deaths and 21 injuries at a hospital in Yunnan Province (southwest China). In August 2023, a man with a history of mental disorders killed two people and injured seven others in a knife attack in the same province.
