Unknown Fate Surrounds Son of Gabonese President... Here’s What We Know

The fate of the son of the Gabonese president remains unknown since the coup that was paving the way for his strong role to succeed his father. So who is this young man? His name is Nourredine Bongo, the eldest son of Ali Bongo, the Gabonese president who was ousted by the military early Wednesday and placed under house arrest, while Nourredine was taken to prison.

According to the newspaper "Al-Dar," the military's targeting of Nourredine Bongo was not coincidental; if Ali Bongo had died years ago, Nourredine would have taken power, which would have been a violation of the Gabonese constitution that states that in such a case, the President of the Senate should assume temporary power until presidential elections are held within a maximum of 45 days.

Previously, Gabonese President Ali Bongo appointed his son Nourredine (31 years old) as the General Coordinator of Presidential Affairs. By virtue of the presidential decree at that time, Nourredine became responsible for "assisting the President of the Republic in managing all state affairs."

At a time when arrangements were being made for the transfer of power from father to son, the sound of gunfire was heard in Gabon, shattering the ambitions of Nourredine Bongo, who hoped to succeed his father and maintain rule within the Bongo family, which has been in power for over five decades.
