Earthquake Hits the Aegean Sea

An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Aegean Sea today, Monday, off the coast of Muğla province in southwestern Turkey. The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported in a statement that the earthquake occurred at 07:24 (+3 GMT) at a depth of 9.65 km. They added that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 195.27 km away from the Datça area in Muğla province. It is noted that the Aegean Sea, which extends from the Mediterranean Sea, is situated between Greece to the west and north, Turkey to the east, and the island of Crete to the south, connecting to the Sea of Marmara via the Dardanelles Strait. A previous earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale occurred in the Aegean Sea on April 19, near the shores of the Seferihisar area in İzmir province, western Turkey, with no reported damage according to AFAD.
