Turkey Investigates Death of Saudi Citizen After Medical Procedure

The Istanbul public prosecutor's office is investigating the death of a Saudi citizen who underwent height-increasing surgery in a private hospital, according to local Turkish newspapers. Details reveal that the Saudi national had the surgery at "The First" hospital in Beylikdüzü on February 18. Subsequently, he stayed at the "Days Inn Esenyurt" hotel, where he began receiving physical therapy, but later died due to a deterioration in his health.

Reports indicate that the prosecutor's office started the investigation following the suspicious death, seizing medical documents, camera footage, and medical reports as part of the inquiry. Furthermore, they have sent the body to the forensic center to determine the cause of death and to notify the Saudi embassy.

Orthopedic consultant Dr. Ayed Al-Shahrani explained that bone lengthening surgeries, whether for medical treatment of short stature or cosmetic reasons, are medically recognized procedures. He emphasized that they require specific conditions regarding the patient and should be performed by specialists, as with any surgical procedure, to ensure maximum safety.

Dr. Al-Shahrani pointed out that complications could arise if necessary precautions are not taken to avoid them, stressing that this applies not only to height-increasing surgeries but to most surgical operations that restrict movement, particularly those involving the lower limbs. He noted the importance of these precautions to prevent deep vein thrombosis or "clots," which could migrate to the lungs and result in death. The precautions usually involve administering specific medications to prevent clot formation and providing particular instructions to the patient.

It is noteworthy that the Istanbul public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the cause of death, seized medical documents, camera footage, and medical reports, and sent them to the forensic center to ascertain the causes, while the Saudi embassy is monitoring the case.
