The Kremlin indicated today, Monday, that it needs to understand the purpose of the discussions that will take place in Saudi Arabia concerning the war in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, "Russia needs to understand the goals of the planned talks and what will be discussed." Peskov confirmed that Russia would be monitoring the discussions, saying, "Of course, Russia will follow this meeting. We need to understand the objectives of the planned talks and what will be discussed. Any attempt to promote a peaceful settlement deserves a positive assessment." He noted that "the Kyiv regime does not want and cannot want peace as long as it is used solely as a tool in the West's war against Russia."
The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that Saudi Arabia will invite Western countries, Ukraine, and major developing nations to the upcoming talks. The newspaper stated that Kyiv and Western countries hope the discussions will lead to international support for peace terms favorable to Ukraine. Additionally, the Kremlin considered the situation in Niger to be "of serious concern" and Peskov called on all parties in Niger to exercise restraint and return to the rule of law as soon as possible.
