Iraqi Factions Shell American Base in Syria

Armed factions in Iraq announced on Sunday that they shelled an American military base in Syria. The Iraqi factions did not mention any damage to the Al-Omar oil field base but added that they continue to "pound the strongholds of the enemies." The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Monday that there are indications of casualties from the shelling by armed Iraqi factions at "the largest American base on Syrian territory." The observatory later indicated that armed Iraqi factions attacked the American Al-Omar base inside Syria, resulting in the death of at least five members of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

In this context, two American military officials told CNN that the United States destroyed or caused damage to 84 out of 85 targets in their strikes on Friday in Syria and Iraq. The network reported that all 85 targets, except for one, "were destroyed or damaged." The officials based their assessment on "initial damage evaluations from the battlefield." A full assessment of the impacts of the American strikes is still underway, but one official said there are currently no indicators that the strikes resulted in the deaths of any members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

In recent months, armed Iraqi factions have consistently shelled American positions in the region, the latest incident being an attack near the Tanf base on the Syrian-Jordanian border, where three American soldiers were killed.
