The announcement by Egyptian media personality Amr Adib regarding his acquisition of Saudi nationality has raised questions about the reasons and the process that led to this grant. According to Saudi law, there are several conditions for granting nationality, allowing it to be conferred on foreigners who have acquired the status of regular permanent residency in the Kingdom for a period no less than five consecutive years, have good conduct, and have not been convicted of a moral crime leading to imprisonment for more than six months.
Despite these conditions, a royal decree issued in 2019 opened the door for Amr Adib, as it stated the inclusion of distinguished competencies in religious, medical, scientific, cultural, sports, and technical fields, with the aim of enhancing development and benefiting the nation across various areas.
In 2021, Egyptians were also granted opportunities through royal decrees that awarded nationality following the 2019 directive, acknowledging them as individuals with competencies and excellence in their fields. Amr Adib was among those granted Saudi nationality in accordance with this royal decree. He is an Egyptian-American engineer and entrepreneur with a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, an investor in several startups, and has held various executive positions in several companies.
During his program "Al-Hekayah," aired on MBC Masr, Amr Adib announced his new nationality on Monday night. He stated, "I was granted Saudi nationality some time ago. I am now a citizen with both Egyptian and Saudi nationality, and I would like to thank King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for this honor and distinction."
