Presidential Vacancy... Unannounced Movements in This Regard

Attention is focused on the upcoming actions by the ambassadors of the Quintet Committee as they engage with political references, preceding the visit of French envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian to Lebanon soon. The delegation is set to meet with Speaker of the House Nabih Berri in Ain al-Tineh and then with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati in the Serail. Following that, the delegation will meet with political figures and parliamentary blocs to discuss serious solutions to the presidential vacancy crisis and the potential for a third candidate.

In this context, former MP Anis Nassar expressed hope to the Anbaa electronic newspaper for the "serious efforts being made by the Quintet Committee this time," noting that "the committee enjoys international support this time after reaching a unified vision for electing the president, unlike the previous period when a year was wasted due to the French side's insistence on nominating former Minister Sleiman Frangieh. Today, the situation has changed, and everyone is convinced to search for a third candidate, away from the options of candidates Sleiman Frangieh and Jihad Azour."

Nassar believes that "the name of Army Commander Joseph Aoun is still under discussion and remains within the third option, if not the most likely among the names being considered, along with the two announced names, General Elias Beiruti and Colonel George Khoury. There may also be other unannounced names." He noted that "the final word on this matter lies with Hezbollah, which has not yet defined its position on the initiative," pointing out that the actions of the "National Moderation" bloc indicate a "harmony between it and President Berri."

Nassar also revealed an unannounced movement in this regard by some independent MPs, emphasizing the importance of securing a two-thirds quorum before discussing names, "because there are blocs that will not agree to a name that has no clear stance or flavor, and thus will not participate in ensuring the quorum." He expressed concern over the maneuvers of some political forces to obstruct this entitlement.
