Sudan: Army Agrees to Hand Over Choice of Sovereignty and Ministerial Leaders to Civilians

The Deputy Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemeti), announced that he and the Chairman of the Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, have agreed to leave the selection of the leaders of the Sovereignty and Council of Ministers to civilians.

In a statement made on Friday, Burhan and Dagalo reiterated their "strict commitment to the exit of the military establishment from the political scene, completely focusing on its duties as stipulated in the constitution and law."

They emphasized that they firmly agreed that civilians would choose the heads of the Sovereignty Council and the Council of Ministers. The statement expressed "hope for the agreement of the revolutionary forces on the formation of a fully civilian government to complete the tasks of the transitional period, laying the groundwork for a true democratic transformation."

It highlighted "the importance of coordination and cooperation among all Sudanese to eliminate the difficulties facing the transition, in achieving the aspirations of the people to build a stable democratic state."

The statement called for "prioritizing the higher national interests to preserve the security and stability of the country."

On July 4, al-Burhan announced the military's withdrawal from the national dialogue sponsored by the "triple mechanism." He stated that the military's withdrawal from the dialogue aims "to allow political and revolutionary forces and national components to form an independent national competencies government to complete the requirements of the transitional period."
