The Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, raised a sign with what he claimed to be the phone number of Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar. This action took place during a session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday evening, which was dedicated to voting on a non-binding resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
During the session, 153 countries supported the resolution, while 10 opposed it, and 23 abstained from voting. Gilad Erdan rejected the ceasefire resolution in Gaza, describing it as "hypocrisy," stating that it would only "prolong death and destruction in the region," without clarifying how it would do so. He argued that the current ceasefire would "ensure the survival of Hamas."
He stated that if UN members wanted a "real ceasefire," they should contact Hamas's office in Gaza. He raised a small white sign with a number he said belonged to Yahya Sinwar, along with a picture of him. He addressed the delegates, saying: "Contact Hamas and urge them to lay down their weapons, surrender, and release the hostages; this will bring about a permanent ceasefire."
