French President Emmanuel Macron expressed concern about the current course of Iran's nuclear program and warned his Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raisi, during a phone call about the implications of supplying drones to Russia. Macron urged Iran to immediately halt its support for Russia in its war against Ukraine.
According to the statement, Macron also expressed his worries regarding the current trajectory of Iran's nuclear program during the call. Britain, France, Germany, the United States, and Ukraine have stated that supplying Russia with Iranian-made drones violates the United Nations Security Council resolution from 2015 concerning the Iran nuclear agreement.
It is noteworthy that this call coincided with the announcement by the Russian Ministry of Defense regarding the use of drones to destroy Ukrainian armored vehicles that had recently been received from Western countries and were used in the counteroffensive against Russian forces.
The Iranian news agency "Fars" reported that the phone call between the two presidents lasted 90 minutes, during which they discussed "ways to develop bilateral relations, as well as regional developments and negotiations to lift the unjust sanctions on Iran."
According to the same agency, the Iranian president pointed out the "miscalculations of some European governments regarding the Iranian people," attributing it to these governments falling into the trap of misleading information from terrorist and separatist groups, emphasizing the need to avoid interference in internal affairs and respect the principle of national sovereignty.
On the other hand, the "IRNA" agency stated that President Ebrahim Raisi warned against the continuation of all kinds of politicized and unconstructive actions concerning the negotiations to lift the sanctions, emphasizing the ongoing cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has repeatedly acknowledged the country's adherence to its legal commitments.
Regarding the Ukrainian issue, the agency mentioned that Raisi reiterated Iran's rejection of wars, focusing on "diplomacy" as the optimal way to resolve disputes. In turn, Macron emphasized the continuation of negotiations to lift the sanctions until the desired outcome is achieved, describing Iran as "part of the solution to the Ukrainian crisis" and calling for an enhanced role for Tehran in this regard.
