The Egyptian President's Advisor for Health and Prevention, Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, addressed an "important and urgent" message to citizens in Egypt following the announcement of the new COVID-19 variant in the country. Tag El-Din stated in remarks to reporters on Wednesday that COVID-19 has not ended yet, and its mutation is a natural and expected occurrence. However, he emphasized that the reassuring message is that the new variant is more contagious but less severe.
He noted that the most common symptoms of the virus currently include: moderate fever, runny nose, sneezing, mild body aches, and sore throat. The president's health advisor confirmed that these symptoms typically disappear within two days at most. Tag El-Din stressed that no severe cases or fatalities have been reported as a result of the new variant "EG.5."
The Egyptian Ministry of Health announced that test results from disease surveillance centers for flu-like illnesses and severe respiratory diseases confirmed two positive cases of COVID-19 from the Omicron variant EG-5.2. The ministry stated that the clinical symptoms exhibited by these individuals are mild, and they are recovering. According to the Ministry of Health, symptoms of the new variant are mild, and there are no medical recommendations for additional measures.
