Blinken: Mediators are Working to Bridge Gaps in Efforts for Agreement in Gaza

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken affirmed that mediators are tirelessly working to bridge the remaining gaps in pursuit of an agreement regarding detainees and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Blinken stated, "We are intensively working with Israel, Qatar, and Egypt to close the remaining gaps and try to reach an agreement. We are currently in talks on this matter, and I am confident that these will continue in the coming days."

The U.S. Secretary of State noted that Israel has sent a negotiation team, reflecting the possibility and necessity of reaching an agreement on a ceasefire, the release of detainees, and the introduction of more humanitarian aid. He added, "We are committed to continuing to work diligently, no matter how long it takes, until this goal is achieved."

He explained that President Joe Biden has been very clear: "Given that there are approximately 1.4 million civilians in Rafah, many of whom have been displaced from other areas in Gaza, we need to see a clear and actionable plan for Rafah that includes keeping civilians out of harm's way." He continued, "But it must also ensure that they receive the appropriate care by providing shelter, food, medicine, and clothing, but so far we have not yet seen such a plan."

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the latter's approval of the military operation plans in Rafah. The office stated in a release that the Prime Minister approved plans for the Rafah operation, noting that the army is preparing to evacuate residents from the area.

On another front, the Palestinian presidency warned against the potential invasion of Rafah and called for rapid intervention from the U.S. administration and the international community. The presidency's statement clarified that the Israeli operation in Rafah is seen as an extension of the process of displacement.
