North Korea Plans to Deploy New Rocket Launchers

North Korea intends to equip its army with new 240 mm rocket launchers starting this year. The Korean Central News Agency announced that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a live ammunition test of a "technically updated" rocket system yesterday, Friday. The agency stated that the new launch system will be "deployed to units of the Korean People's Army as alternative equipment (to what is currently used) between 2024 and 2026."

Images showed leader Kim Jong Un speaking with military officials during the inspection of the rocket launcher, along with what appeared to be live ammunition testing operations for these rocket systems. Earlier, Pyongyang stated in February that it had developed a new control system for 240 mm rocket launchers, which would lead to a "qualitative change" in its defense capabilities, and conducted a test for new shell launches last month. Pyongyang clarified that it carried out tests during which 8 rocket shells "hit a target to demonstrate the superiority and destructive power of the updated 240 mm rocket launcher system."
