The German Bundesliga announced today, Monday, that Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen has been named Player of the Season after helping his club win its first league title. Leverkusen is the first team to finish a season in the Bundesliga unbeaten and has not suffered any losses in all competitions this season, maintaining a streak of 51 matches. Wirtz contributed to 18 goals over 47 matches. He came off the bench to score three goals in a 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen in April, securing the Bundesliga title for Leverkusen with five matches still to play. Leverkusen is also competing for the UEFA Europa League title and the DFB-Pokal. The 21-year-old midfielder received three Player of the Month awards this season and was selected for Germany’s preliminary squad for the 2024 European Championship. He scored the only goal in Germany's 1-0 friendly win over France in March. The award winner is chosen based on fan voting (40%), club votes (30%), and expert evaluations (30%).
