The "World Powerlifting Championship for People of Determination - Dubai 2023" was inaugurated at the Hilton Habtoor City hotel in Dubai, with the participation of 90 countries under the patronage of Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council and Chairman of the Higher Committee for the Protection of the Rights of People of Determination.
The opening ceremony began with the national anthem, followed by a parade of participating countries. A video titled "People of Determination: The Past of Stories and the Joy of Platforms, This Is How the Story Began" showcased the evolution of the sport for people of determination and the UAE's pioneering experience in supporting it. The ceremony featured the raising of the flag of the International Powerlifting Federation for People of Determination, as well as the flag for the current edition.
The event included "The Promise," a theatrical musical performance by members of the Dubai Club for People of Determination, highlighting the development, renaissance, and leadership of the UAE. It conveyed the message that this segment of society innovates and creates to achieve local and global accomplishments, while introducing the participating delegations to the heritage, culture, identity, and civilization of the UAE.
Thani Jumaa Al-Balrqad, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, stated, "We welcome everyone to the UAE, the land of initiatives, to celebrate together in Dubai the opening of the Powerlifting World Championship for People of Determination, where the strong will of people of determination meets the world championship." He added, "We invite the champions to new moments in 'Dubai 2023,' as they seek achievements and present a compelling image of strong will, especially since Dubai has accustomed us to excellence and prepared suitable environments to showcase advanced technical levels. We are proud to host two world championships within 60 days, following the successful Wheelchair Basketball World Cup."
The Chairman emphasized that the UAE, under the vision of inspiring leadership, believes in the capabilities of people of determination and their role in all fields, and is keen on developing their abilities and providing means to elevate their sports talents.
Qader Qamar Al-Zaman, Technical Director of the International Powerlifting Federation for People of Determination, expressed gratitude to the UAE and Dubai for hosting this global event, which cements the country's position on the global map for people of determination, especially given the significant role the UAE plays in supporting and empowering this demographic, which has positively impacted the development of sports for this group on all levels.
