The General Director of Sonatrach, Toufik Hakkar, announced today, Tuesday, that Algeria intends to place no less than 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually in the market over the next five years.
He explained that "the group will continue to provide its partners with confirmed, reliable, stable, and sustainable supplies of natural gas as long as the demand for gas is guaranteed," noting that "the group has made significant efforts to supply additional quantities of natural gas in 2022, in addition to fulfilling its commitments to local and foreign customers." He added: "The group intends to continue developing its gas capabilities to offer additional quantities at both the national and international markets, particularly the European market."
In this context, the Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, Mohamed Hamel, revealed that forum experts expect the demand for natural gas to continue rising by about 36 percent by 2050, and that natural gas will play a fundamental role in the future. Thus, the global economy is expected to grow to more than 200 trillion dollars by 2050.
Hamel confirmed that "Algeria is a country relied upon in the gas sector," adding that it currently plays "a recognized active role, which is expected to be strengthened in the future given the availability of resources and competencies to develop the gas industry."
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energies, Bouziane Mahmah, pointed to the important role that gas plays in the energy transition as a clean energy source, considering it "the smooth bridge" towards deploying renewable energies and transitioning to better energy sources.
