Title: Experts: Trump Lacked Authority to Declassify Nuclear Weapons Document

Security experts have indicated that former U.S. President Donald Trump did not have the legal authority while in office to declassify a document related to nuclear weapons, which is among the documents he has been charged with unlawfully possessing. The classified document, listed as number 19 in Trump's indictment for jeopardizing national security, cannot be declassified under the Atomic Energy Act except through a process that requires the involvement of the Departments of Energy and Defense. For this reason, experts state that the "nuclear document is a special case in the indictment, which includes 31 documents, as the declassification of the remaining documents can be done via executive order." Government secrecy expert Steven Aftergood remarked, "The claim that Trump could declassify the nuclear weapons information is irrelevant, as the classification was not imposed by executive order but by law." Additionally, a former U.S. national security official, who requested anonymity, noted that "the situation is very clear. There is nothing that states the president can make such a decision."
