Discussion of the Public Budget in the House of Representatives

The General Assembly of the House of Representatives convened today, chaired by House Speaker Nabih Berri, to study and approve the draft public budget for the year 2024, after the Finance and Budget Committee made significant modifications to the government's proposal. About 40 MPs requested to speak. The details indicate that the amendments covered 87 articles out of a total of 133, where 46 were canceled, 73 were amended, and 14 articles were approved as presented in the proposal, meaning that the amendment and cancellation encompassed 90% of the project submitted by the Ministry of Finance. As soon as the session began, a heated debate occurred between Speaker Berri and MP Melhem Khalaf, who objected to the legislation in the absence of a president.
