The Turkish official news agency "Anadolu" reported that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said yesterday, Friday, that the local elections scheduled for March 31 will be his last. Erdogan, the most successful politician in Turkey's modern electoral history, has led the country for over two decades. He has won more than 12 elections since 2002 and was re-elected for a five-year term in the elections held in May 2023. Erdogan stated: "This is my last election, and under the mandate granted by law, these are my final elections. The result of these elections will be the transfer of the legacy to my brothers who will come after me." Turkey is set to hold local elections on March 31, with various parties having chosen their candidates for major municipalities weeks ago. Since the main opposition party managed to unseat the ruling coalition's candidates in Istanbul and Ankara during the 2019 elections, "Justice and Development" is trying to regain control of those municipalities in the upcoming elections at the end of next month.
