Australian police announced on Sunday that they shot a boy after he stabbed a man in Perth, the capital of Western Australia, in an attack that authorities said "indicates an act of terrorism." State authorities reported that there are indications that the 16-year-old boy, armed with a kitchen knife, had adopted extremist ideologies online. They added that they received calls from concerned members of the local Muslim community prior to the attack, which occurred late Saturday night.
The police clarified that "the attack in the Willetton suburb shows signs of terrorism but has not yet been officially declared a terrorist act." Western Australia Premier Roger Cook stated in a televised press conference in Perth, "At this stage, it appears he acted alone," referring to the attacker. Authorities reported that "the victim, who was stabbed in the back, is in stable condition in the hospital."
This incident comes after New South Wales police charged several boys with terrorism-related offenses in investigations following the stabbing of an Assyrian bishop while he was delivering a sermon live on air in Sydney on April 15.
