Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro filed a complaint against current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, demanding an apology and compensation after being accused of taking furniture from the presidential residence when he left office. The former president and his wife, Michelle, submitted a joint request for "moral damages" to a court in the Brazilian capital. This comes after the Brazilian government announced on Wednesday the disappearance of "261 items" from the presidential palace in January 2023, the same month President Lula assumed office. Lula had reported the loss of furniture when he moved into the presidential residence in Brasília. He stated at the time, "If it belonged to Bolsonaro, he is right to take it, but this is public property. I don't know why he took the bed." The former presidential couple is demanding that Lula retract his accusation, apologize to them, and pay 20,000 Brazilian reais (about 4,000 dollars) to a non-governmental organization. The Bolsonaro family resided in the Alvorada Palace from 2019 to 2022. Bolsonaro previously stated that he "fears no trial" after documents from the Supreme Court revealed accusations against him for attempting a coup to remain in power following his loss in the 2022 elections.
