On June 9, 2023, the Administrative Court in Egypt examined a lawsuit filed against the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Supply and Finance, which demands the cancellation of the decision to raise bread prices. The lawsuit called for halting and revoking the ministerial decision, which included increasing the price of subsidized bread produced in bakeries to twenty piasters.
The lawsuit stated that "a loaf of bread holds great importance and has been a unifying symbol for the Egyptian people for thousands of years, especially in light of the economic conditions the country has experienced over the past years and the skyrocketing prices, which have become a daily phenomenon, along with the depreciation of the Egyptian pound against the dollar." It further added, "In the complete absence of government oversight in monitoring markets and controlling the prices of essential goods for citizens to achieve social justice, the pursuit of self-sufficiency in food has become a difficult task."
The Egyptian government had decided to raise the price of subsidized bread from 5 piasters to 20 piasters starting from June 1, 2023.
