The Italian team owed its historic victory to its Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman, who scored a hat-trick in the 12th, 26th, and 76th minutes of the match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the Irish capital. Atalanta became the 11th Italian club to reach a continental final and the first Italian team to win the Europa League in its current format. Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen, who won the UEFA Cup in 1988, failed to continue their "golden" streak of 51 unbeaten matches across all competitions this season.
