Flooding in Southern Libya: House Collapses and Power Outage

The floods affecting the southern region of Libya have led to the collapse of four houses in the Mashru' neighborhood of the Ubari municipality, according to "Sky News Arabia," citing the ambulance and emergency service. They noted that damage assessment is "ongoing." The Ubari hospital received a woman and her son injured due to one of the house collapses in the area south of Ubari, which has experienced rainfall since Sunday evening. Osama Ali, spokesperson for the ambulance service, confirmed that one of the drivers was injured while heading to the collapse site.

The General Electricity Company announced that power outages occurred in areas within Ubari due to adverse weather conditions, stating that water "invaded several electricity distribution stations there." The company indicated that its technical teams rushed to the location to assess the damage and commence emergency maintenance work.

Salem al-Zadma, the Deputy Prime Minister assigned by Parliament, warned all citizens in the municipality, especially in Mashru', to stay away from the nearby wadi channel where heavy rainfall had pooled. Al-Zadma advised residents to "exercise caution and avoid roaming around the city" and directed the Ubari Security Directorate to take all measures necessary to evacuate homes located in the river's drainage path.

The United Nations envoy for Libya also expressed concern over the emergence of "unilateral and conflicting initiatives" from various parties and Libyan institutions regarding the reconstruction of Derna, where devastating floods resulted in thousands of deaths last month. Envoy Abdoulaye Bathily stated in a statement that "these unilateral efforts may yield counterproductive results, deepen existing divisions in the country, and hinder reconstruction efforts, in addition to contradicting the wave of solidarity, support, and national unity demonstrated by the Libyan people from all over the country in response to the crisis."
