Pink Card to Debut at Copa America

Pink Card to Debut at Copa America

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has confirmed that the pink card will make its debut in the Copa America 2024, which will be held in June in the United States. The Spanish newspaper "Marca" reported that the pink card will be used to notify, after informing the referee or the fourth official, about a potential substitution by the team due to suspected head injury or concussion.

It continued: "When a concussion substitution is made, the opposing team will automatically have the option to make an additional substitution." The competitions and operations directorate of the federation announced that a sixth (or seventh) substitute may be added to prioritize player health.

Furthermore, the Spanish newspaper "AS" clarified that "this substitution can only be made once for each team, in addition to the five substitutions allowed during the 90 minutes (or six in the case of extra time)." It added: "The player who is substituted cannot return to the field and must go to the dressing room, and if necessary, to a medical center."

The Copa America will kick off on June 20 and will conclude on July 14.
