The U.S. military stated yesterday, Sunday, that an American fighter jet shot down a ship-targeting cruise missile launched from areas controlled by the Houthis in Yemen towards an American destroyer in the southern Red Sea. This interception is the latest incident in the Red Sea, where the Houthis have been attacking international shipping, claiming it to be part of a campaign to support Palestinians in Gaza. This comes after a series of U.S. and British airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, which prompted the Iranian-aligned group to threaten a "strong" retaliation.
The U.S. Central Command announced the missile interception on the social media platform X, stating that no injuries or damages were reported. They noted that the missile was shot down near the coastal city of Hodeidah in Yemen. The Houthi group claimed yesterday that they spotted American planes flying near Yemeni airspace and its coastal areas. Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdul Salam described the activities of the "enemy" as a gross violation of national sovereignty.
