# The Passing of Berlusconi at Age 86

Italian media announced on Monday the death of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi at the age of 86. A spokesperson for the Catholic Church in Milan indicated that Berlusconi's official funeral will be held at the city's "Cathedral" on Wednesday at 13:00 GMT.

Silvio Berlusconi was a famous businessman and billionaire who founded the largest media network in Italy and significantly changed the political landscape. He served as Prime Minister from 1994 to 1995, from 2001 to 2006, and from 2008 to 2011. He had been suffering from leukemia and recently contracted pneumonia. Despite a series of sexual scandals and legal issues that tarnished his image, he retained a special place in the hearts of many Italians.

In June 2013, an Italian court sentenced Berlusconi to 7 years in prison, banning him from holding any public office for life after being accused of engaging in prostitution with a minor and abusing his power. He also faced investigation by the Naples prosecutor for allegedly buying or bribing a senator in 2006 to bring down the government of former Prime Minister Romano Prodi.

An Italian appeals court also upheld a conviction in 2013 that sentenced him to 4 years for tax evasion related to broadcasting rights and banned him from holding any public office for two years, while the Senate voted to expel him from the chamber that same year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described Berlusconi as a "dear friend and prominent politician." In a message of condolence, Putin stated, "For me, Silvio was a dear person and a true friend. I have always admired his wisdom and ability to make balanced decisions, even in the toughest situations." He added, "Russia will remember Berlusconi as a strong supporter and principled advocate for enhancing friendly relations between our countries."

Two government members expressed their condolences for Berlusconi's passing, with Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini describing him in a statement as "a great man and a great Italian." Defense Minister Guido Crosetto wrote on his official Twitter account: "Berlusconi left a great void; I loved him very much. Goodbye Silvio."
