Israeli emergency services reported that six settlers were injured by gunfire near the Ma'ale Adumim settlement in Jerusalem. According to eyewitnesses, the assailant opened fire inside the Ma'ale Adumim shopping center before the police were able to chase him down and shoot him.
The perpetrator was reportedly dressed as a sanitation worker inside the mall, as captured by surveillance cameras. The Palestinian health ministry identified the assailant as Mahmud Al-Mazra'a. Israeli emergency services indicated that one of the five injured was in critical condition.
Israeli paramedic Oren Briel stated, "We went to the restaurant where we found the victim lying down and completely unconscious, having sustained gunshot wounds to the upper part of his body... We provided life-saving treatment and quickly transported him to the hospital in critical condition. Following an initial assessment in the trauma room, he was transferred to surgery."
Footage circulated on social media, which Reuters could not independently verify, showed the shooter motionless on the ground, wearing a bright yellow vest, with blood streaming from beneath his body.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir commented on the operation, saying: "It turns out that my policy of arming the largest number of Israelis is correct for self-protection."
The Islamic Jihad movement described the operation as a "natural response to Israeli aggression and the raid on Al-Aqsa Mosque." Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, indicated that the attack was a response to the incursion of Israeli officials into Al-Aqsa Mosque the previous week.
Hamas spokesperson Abdel Latif al-Qanou said he "blesses the heroic shooting operation near the Ma'ale Adumim settlement in occupied Jerusalem in defense of Al-Aqsa Mosque and in response to settler incursions and Talmudic rituals in its courtyards."
The legal status of holy sites raises recurring tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. Israeli television channel 12 reported that an off-duty soldier fired at the Palestinian attacker.
