Arsenal, competing in the English Premier League, announced on Wednesday that it has signed German striker Kai Havertz from Chelsea on a long-term contract. The financial details were not disclosed by either party, but British media reported that Arsenal will pay Chelsea £65 million ($82.63 million), plus an additional £5 million based on other conditions.
The 24-year-old player stated on the club's website: "I am very excited to join this great club and to be part of the Arsenal family." He added, "This club has a rich history, and I hope we achieve many accomplishments together." Havertz joined Chelsea on a five-year deal in 2020 after spending two brilliant seasons with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta commented, "Kai is a world-class player. He is capable of playing in multiple positions and is an intelligent player. He will add a great deal of strength, flexibility, and variety to our squad."
Chelsea had paid up to £71 million, including add-ons, for the services of the German striker, according to media reports, making him the second most expensive signing for Chelsea after goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Havertz has played nearly 140 matches for Chelsea across all competitions, scoring over 30 goals and helping the team win the Champions League in the 2020-2021 season, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in 2021.
Chelsea, in a statement, said: "The German player will leave the team after etching his name in the club's history. We are very grateful for Kai's efforts throughout his time at Stamford Bridge and wish him all the best."
Havertz has played about 40 matches for the German national team since making his debut in a friendly where Germany beat Peru (2-1) in September 2018. He was part of the German squad for Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, where he scored two goals in the 4-2 victory over Costa Rica before Germany exited in the group stage.
