In Derna: Graves Buried in Mud and Mass Funerals in Hundreds

Images from the Libyan city of Derna, hit by storm "Daniel," show mass funerals in the hundreds for the city's residents who were buried this evening in numerous graves at the Martouba cemetery. Many graves have become unsuitable for burial due to rain and mud. Photos from Derna reveal that 300 bodies were buried in mass graves at Martouba cemetery, while the Fatayh cemetery is no longer suitable for burial due to the mud preventing access.

The Minister of Health in Libya, Osman Abdel Jalil, stated that he expects the death toll from the hurricane to rise to 10,000 dead and around 100,000 missing. Meanwhile, Hisham Shekawat, the Minister of Civil Aviation in the Libyan government appointed by the parliament and a member of the emergency committee, noted that a quarter of the city of Derna has completely disappeared due to hurricane "Daniel," which caused significant losses. Shekawat stated in press remarks that a precise death toll has not yet been recorded in Derna, adding that more than a thousand bodies have been recovered in the city following the floods, describing the events as extremely catastrophic.
